AIR
Lancaster & Morecambe offers superb access by road, rail, sea and air.
Manchester Airport
Manchester Airport is less than 2 hours drive and less than 1.5 hours by rail from the Lancaster area and work has begun on a multi-million pound development scheme to increase the capacity of Manchester Airport by 11m passengers a year.
In 2005 the airport achieved 22m passengers a year and now has a major expansion project underway, including Terminal 2 Phase 2, which will more than double the capacity of Terminal 2 from its current 7m to 18m passengers per year.
The airport is investing in the airfield, with extra apron capacity around Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to provide the equivalent of six wide-body or 12 narrow-body aircraft stands. New check-in desks have been added and by 2015 the number of passengers flying from Manchester is set to hit 40m every year - nine million more passengers than Gatwick Airport currently handles.
Blackpool International Airport
Blackpool International Airport is just an hour's drive from Lancaster. Passenger figures have increased by 1,000% since 2001 and the airport anticipates handling in excess of 800,000 passengers in 2006, while offering more than 25 UK and European destinations. Monarch and Jet2.Com have recently joined the list of airlines operating from Blackpool.
Blackpool has scheduled flights to destinations such as Malaga, Palma, Belfast, the Isle of Man and Dublin. Charter flights operate to destinations such as Venice, Prague, Lapland and Tenerife.
Liverpool John Lennon Airport
Less than two hours drive from Lancaster, Liverpool John Lennon Airport is growing fast. More than 4.4 million passengers travelled through the airport in 2005, breaking all previous records and representing a massive 32% increase in passenger business compared to 2004.
Its growth can be largely attributed to the increase in the number of destinations available. In 2005, 21 new services were introduced by a number of airlines, including Ryanair, who created their 12th European base at Liverpool and have added services to 13 new European destinations. VLM's service to London City also saw an increase in passengers, with more than 70,000 using the express service from Liverpool.
