CENTRE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATICS (EI)

EI explores the interplay of geographic, environmental, computing and information sciences in the management of data and knowledge.

Its role is to deliver information in an authoritative and economic format for research, management and public policy making.

Environmental Informatics is a key theme for the Lancaster Environment Centre. It assimilates expertise and technologies and promotes interaction between fields such as environmental monitoring, environmental databases and information systems.

Among EI activities at Lancaster - including areas with international ranking - are:

  • Remote sensing, GIS and land use
  • Dynamic modelling and control
  • Hydrological modelling
  • Coastal and estuarine modelling and information systems
  • Ecosystem processes, prediction and monitoring
  • Environmental policy and public understanding

EI is an emerging area in which Lancaster can already claim to have world-class excellence as a contributor of key components, but which would benefit from complementary research and a common focus for all EI activities.
