CENTRE FOR SUSTAINABLE CHEMICAL
MANAGEMENT (CCM)
The Centre for Sustainable Chemical Management (CCM), an interdisciplinary research centre based at Lancaster University, is at the heart of
critical research into understanding how chemicals behave in the environment.
Only by understanding this in detail can we strike a balance between the responsible use of chemicals and acceptable risk.
The CCM has been established to provide an integrated approach covering all aspects of chemical fate, behaviour and effects.
The Centre provides sound, cutting edge science to address important issues such as:
- Improved procedures to measure, predict and model chemical fate, behaviour and effects.
- More effective design and use of chemicals.
- Reliable and sensitive measurement and tracking of chemical movement in the environment.
- Assessment of the effects on natural systems and target organisms.
- Responsible disposal, destruction and re-use of chemicals.
- Improved procedures for assessing the potential for remediation strategies.
The CCM's specialists believe that as a society, our aim should be to design chemicals
from the outset to achieve their purpose, without resulting in harmful effects on the environment or humans.
The development of 'green' chemistry and a transparent and effective regulatory framework for existing chemicals will lead to a more
sustainable chemical industry that has a robust scientific basis.
